African-led research for better glaucoma care

AfriGEN clinicians and researchers

A network built for discovery, trust and impact.

We connect African expertise and international collaboration to improve understanding of glaucoma in African populations.

Who we are

African questions. African leadership. Shared knowledge.

The African Glaucoma Research Network is committed to transforming glaucoma care through innovative research and collaboration within and beyond Africa.

Our work brings together clinical eye care, genomics, data analysis, social research and community engagement. We aim to generate evidence that is scientifically rigorous, relevant to African populations and communicated in ways people can understand and use.

Network coordination is based at University College Hospital in Ibadan, Nigeria, with a collaborative outlook that crosses institutions, disciplines and borders.

What guides us

Four commitments shape every part of our work.

Excellent research depends on more than technology. It requires clear purpose, ethical practice, capable people and respectful partnership.

African relevance

We prioritise questions, evidence and outcomes that address the needs of African populations.

Research rigour

We value careful clinical characterisation, robust methods, transparent reporting and peer review.

Ethical participation

We promote informed participation, privacy, respect and responsible stewardship of research data.

Collaboration

We build partnerships that strengthen African expertise and share knowledge responsibly.

Mission and vision

From better understanding to better outcomes.

Our vision: Transforming glaucoma care in Africa through innovative genomic research.

Our mission: Lead and enable research that identifies people and populations at risk, strengthens African scientific knowledge, supports informed community participation and helps translate discovery into screening, care and policy.
